Sometimes you’re in a bind and you need a Bible verse
We’ve all been in seasons of life where it feels like Satan is breathing down our backs. Some of us face actual demonic attacks.
When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, astute observers are quick to notice that the way Jesus combated spiritual warfare was to quote scripture back to Satan. In other words, Jesus himself had scriptures for spiritual warfare!
For the enemy who speaks only in lies, hearing the truth proclaimed to him pushes back his power and gives power instead to the one declaring it.
You may find yourself in a spiritual jam, as I have been many times in my life, and need some scriptures for spiritual warfare to help you in the time of battle.
Why These Scriptures
Anyone can give you a list of scriptures that talk about spiritual warfare. But there’s a specific angle I think is actually effective and proven.
It starts with understanding one principle: Spiritual warefare is not about focusing on the size of the enemy, but focusing on the size of our God.
A lot of times, the enemy wants to trick us into thinking how large he is and forget how large God is. The enemy is often a mouse with a megaphone trying to be louder than it actually is.
The solution, therefore, for warfare is turn our attention to how awesome our God is.
Without further adieu, here are 7 definitive scriptures for spiritual warfare!
Scriptures for Spiritual Warfare
- Psalm 91:1-2
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Rest well knowing that we are in the shelter of God’s wings. It is a place of comfort and protection.
- John 16:33
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Life often feels like a big battle. But Jesus has overcome the world. What that means is that the enemy is still waging battles, but God has won the war.
Take comfort in resting the commander of chief who has already won.
- 1 John 4:4
“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
The greatest gift in spiritual battle is that, if you’re a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in you. That means the God of the universe, all his power, his authority, rests inside of you for battle.
- Isaiah 54:17
“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.”
This is about God being the great quarterback of the universe. He sees all the plans of the enemy’s and is quickly able to refute them. Take courage in that.
- Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you”
The great practical strategy, as I’ve suggested, is not focusing on the size of the enemy, but rather focusing on the size of God. As this passage says, as we keep our mind on him, he promises to keep us in perfect peace.
- Psalm 62: 6-8
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.
Things to remember about God are some descriptors used in this passage. He is our rock, our salvation, our refuge. He is a steady and sure place to stand on.
- Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The amazing thing about God is that he gives us a peace that transcends understanding. What that means is that no matter our circumstances, he gives us peace. That’s the power and beauty of following Jesus.
