Teach me to number my days so that I may get a heart of wisdom
Psalm 90:12
Many people, when they enter their 50’s, get into what we call a “Mid-life Crisis” because they realize they’ve gone through most of their life already and questions of their purpose in life begin coming up. This is a very typical occurrence and sometimes results in tragic and wild behaviors.
However, I want to propose that the problem is that not that they’re having one. The problem is that it’s too late.
A life of regret is a life lived without wisdom. Too many people live life moment-by-moment, and find out that the sum of those often rash decisions made in the moments amounted into a life that didn’t matter.
We made poor choices on how we spent our time and energies. We made poor choices in finding out what was really important in life. We spent our money in things and possessions that didn’t matter. And then after a while, say like, when we’re 50, we end up having a “Mid-Life Crisis” and it sucks….what’s the solution?
Here’s a suggestion:
The solution is to have your Mid-Life Crisis now.
If there’s a time to think about the purpose of your life, now’s the time to do it. You don’t know if you’ll have another 20 years to live, or 10, or even 5.
It is only the wise who live each day with the projection of the end of their life in mind. It’s only the wise that allow that projection forms the decisions they make on a day to day basis, and not the other way around. It’s only the wise who have the epitaph of their tombstone already thought out.
