For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
Romans 8:4

What sets us apart as Christian? Paul says here that it is those who are led by the Holy Spirit.

That word led really stuck out to me this morning.

To be led is meant to be going somewhere. It is to be spoken to. It is to be counseled. It is to be near someone. It is to admit our blindness without this person.

And so, it begs some questions:

Are we being led by the Holy Spirit regularly? Do we hear his voice? Do we recognize his counsel? Are our lives dominated by his nearness? And would we be blind without the leading of the Holy Spirit?

Or are we led by ourselves, or another. Are we self-sufficient? Are we spiritually deaf to his presence?

The Holy Spirit is what defines us as Christians. Not as a force, but as a Person. A person who leads, counsels, speaks, transforms, and fills. And without these regular experiences, we are missing out on what it means to be Christian.

Holy Spirit, come and fill us with your presence today. Help us to hear your voice, to recognize where you are taking us. Help us to NEVER be content with settling where you are. But as you lead Abraham to Canaan, as you led David to the throne, as you led Jesus to the cross, so would you lead us always. Help us never to be lacking discernment about where you are taking us. For to be led by you is to be called your child.
