How do you describe something that is beautiful?

For me, when I see something beautiful, I remark the impact it has on my heart. It’s breathtakingly powerful often and evokes various emotions related to “awe.”

I realize today that God intended us to behold beauty. Our hearts were designed to behold beauty. We were meant to be awed by beauty.

This realization brought new insight into what David prayed for in Psalm 27:4. He asks God…

“One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.”

He desired that he would see the beauty of God.

I always thought it strange as a young kid, not in touch with my emotions, to describe Jesus as beautiful. I mean, c’mon Jesus is a dude…in what way is he possibly beautiful?

But as I meditate on the person of Jesus, and his character traits, and what he does to his people, and how he woos us as lovers, and how he caresses us as children,…the only way I could describe what it was like to reflect about Jesus was that he….is beautiful.

Jesus is breathtakingly beautiful!

That portion of our hearts God designed to see beauty, he had intended for us to see Him. He has always longed to awe and woo our hearts. What we call on earth as “beautiful” are really just poor substitutes for our hearts to be fascinated by the person of God.
