Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…
There are two prequesites for running the race: 1) laying weights aside 2) and laying sins aside.
I found it fascinating that things that weight us down are not necessarily sin.
There are a list of sins that will definitely weigh us down from following Jesus because sin pushes us away from God. And then there are these gray areas which the Bible will not call sin.
The gray areas are where the weights belong.
Smoking, drinking, excessive use of internet, playing video games, etc are not precisely sins in themselves, but for many people, whether they know it or not, they are weights which keep them from fulfilling God’s purposes in life.
Success in the kingdom of God is not finding the boundary line and finding out how close I can stay near it and enjoy its pleasures without getting hurt. It’s about having a vision for God’s glory and pushing everything else aside until His glory becomes the reality in my life.
So when we talk about sin and discipleship, it’s not just the Bible’s “do’s” and “don’t’s”; it’s having the wisdom and the passion to see that whatever keeps us from loving Jesus with everything is probably not worth engaging in.
