When I think about being a Christian as it relates to culture, I find that one of the things I didn’t realize was how advantageous it was to be an Asian American.

There’s something about being both Asian and American that I have that people who are 100% American or 100% Asian don’t inherently have, and it’s this: perspective.

The perspective of which I am speaking about is the perspective of seeing how my own culture conflicts with my following Jesus. And this perspective is given from my position. And my position is one who is on top of the fence.

As I’m on top of the fence, I can see both sides more clearly than if I were on either side. I can see my Asian side, however great that may be, and I can see my American side, however great that may be.

It allows me to see the tendencies of either one because I’m not full integrated into either one. Sure, Asian Americans are generally culturally confused, but when they finally understand that they’re both, they have greater insights into both the American and Asian culture.
